Where Each Approach Reaches the Spine

The same segment of spine can be reached from the back, from the side, or from the front. The direction decides what tissue is crossed on the way in, how much of it has to be moved aside, and what recovery looks like afterwards.

Pick an approach below. The first panel shows where the incision is made, the second traces the path in and highlights what is crossed, and the third shows what is left behind — bone removed, or a cage and screws placed. The first two are decompressions and add no hardware; the last four are fusions.

General education, not medical advice. Which approach suits a given patient depends on their anatomy, the level involved, what the imaging shows, and their overall health — these are the options a surgeon talks through, not a ranking.
